Understanding Medicare Safety Nets
At Lilley Place, we are committed to maximising access to our services for those who need them. With increases in the cost-of-living we thought our valued clients might appreciate some tips on how the Medicare Safety Net can help to ease some of the financial pressure of accessing services.
Medicare Safety Nets
Medicare Safety Nets exist to help to ease the cost of out-of-hospital care. If you require regular appointments, tests, or referrals, out-of-pocket expenses can quickly pile up. The Safety Net is there to ensure that when you most need care, you can still access it.
Our Appointment Fees
Our sessions are typically 50 minutes in duration, and fees are payable at the time of consultation. Your exact costs will be dependent on your treating clinician, and all costs will be advised prior to the initial consultation. See below for more details on our accepted funding and insurances.

Funding and Insurance Options
You do not need a referral to see any member of our team and can enquire to make an initial appointment at any time. However if you are wishing to access a rebate or funding through a third party, a referral will need to be in place at the time of your appointment.
We have a variety of funding options, and Medicare and Private Health Fund claims can be processed at the time of payment and rebates deposited directly into a savings account.
Medicare
Medicare benefits are available to those seeing a Psychologist or a Mental Health Accredited Social Worker through the Better Access Initiative. These benefits are available to those with a diagnosed mental disorder, this covers a broad range of conditions, such as depression or anxiety.
You will need to be referred via a Mental Health Care Plan by your GP, Psychiatrist or Paediatrician, you will need to make a longer appointment to allow time to assess eligibility. Once you have received this referral from your doctor, you will be able to access up to 10 rebated individual sessions per calendar year.
There are alternative referrals options through Medicare, please see below for further details on each:
Chronic Condition Management Plans
If you have a chronic or terminal medical condition (a condition that has been, or is likely to be, present for 6 months or longer or are terminal) you can be referred by your GP for up to 5 sessions per calendar year under a Chronic Condition Management (CCM) plan. These sessions can be used to access rebated sessions with a large number of our allied health providers.
Please contact us or your GP to discuss.
Eating Disorder Treatment and Management Plans
This referral allows for a total of 40 rebated Psychology, and 20 Dietetic appointments, within a 12 month period. Eligibility restrictions do apply, see your GP, Psychiatrist, or Paediatrician to discuss.
Pregnancy Counselling
This initiative assists women who have any concerns related to a current or recent pregnancy (within the past 12 months) to receive up to 3 sessions under Medicare. The pregnancy support counselling is not specifically for a mental health disorder and can be used for parenting, health or relationship concerns.
DVA
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) provides veterans with access to fully funded mental health treatment. To access this treatment, you need to have a Veteran White Card with mental health coverage, or a Veteran Gold Card.
A number of our Psychologists are currently approved DVA providers, please enquire for more details.
A referral is required from your GP, to access these sessions please speak with your GP or see resources from the Australian Government online.
ADF/Bupa
Lilley Place has a number of providers approved to deliver services as part of the ADF Health Services Contract.
A referral from your GP or health centre is required, please speak to your GP or contact us to discuss appointments.
Private Health Funds
Each Health Fund is different, our services typically fall under ‘ancillary’ or ‘extras’ in terms of private health plans. You do not need a medical referral to claim through Private Health Funds. The amount your fund contributes will vary depending on your fund an level of cover, we can assess your coverage through our on-site payment systems.
Private health rebates cannot be claimed if you have already made claims via Medicare for the session.
Please contact your provider to discuss individual rebates.
NDIS
Lilley Place works with Plan managed and Self-managed NDIS clients only. We offer services focusing on improving relationships, improving daily living and coordinating support. We can also provide assistance with the NDIS application process.

Work Cover
We have a number of WorkCover approved and registered Psychologists that can be accessed as part of a work-related mental injury claim.
While your claim is being assessed, you can typically access certain mental health treatments, funded by WorkCover. To access this early mental health support, you’ll need to have lodged a WorkCover claim and have a work capacity certificate from your doctor confirming the diagnosis of a mental injury.
